Observations on the climbing behaviour of the smooth newt [Lissotriton vulgaris] and great crested newt [Triturus cristatus] in south-east England
The smooth newt (Lissotriton vulgaris) is a common amphibian species in the British Isles, often encountered in both aquatic and terrestrial habitats. During a nocturnal amphibian survey on October 7, 2021, in Grosvenor and Hilbert Park, Tunbridge Wells, Kent, 15 smooth newts (12 adults and 3 juveniles) were observed resting on fern foliage at heights of 15–50 cm. Additionally, over 90 individuals were actively foraging on the ground and within a nearby stone wall. The environmental conditions included a temperature of 15°C, humidity of 96%, and low wind speed. Newts were seen on both native and ornamental fern species, and their presence coincided with abundant invertebrate activity, suggesting feeding behavior. This observation provides insight into the arboreal tendencies of smooth newts during terrestrial phases and their potential interactions with invertebrate prey.
