This article discusses welfare and reciprocity in connection with well-being from a social work and social policy point of view. The theoretical framework of this article suggests that social relationships are crucial in relation to reciprocity; however, from a social scientific perspective, it is not enough that only social relationships are supported by the service system. There is also a need for the societal aim of equal income distribution and a well-functioning service system, which support individuals’ real abilities to make choices. These items are framed by practical, symbolic and moral dimensions of reciprocity. The dimensions clarify the important meaning of individuals’ social commitments and the need to transition from individualistic services to the empowerment of the community.
