Communication is an essential part of a successful eye care consultation. Effective interactions between practitioner and patient can optimise the outcomes of clinical activities as well as levels of patient satisfaction and comfort. In this article we draw on the results of our own research studies to identify some key communication issues in eye care consultations. We highlight the importance of understanding the consultation from the patient perspective and discuss how this understanding can help optometrists recognise patient communication behaviours that can otherwise appear puzzling. In particular, we focus on: patient difficulties answering opening questions; patients talking at length; patient displays of concern to do well in tests; and patient difficulty understanding and following treatment advice.
