This chapter explores the relationship of drawing to sound and musical notation. It provides a historical grounding from earlier innovations of Post-war 20th Century composers through to contemporary compositional procedures and the work of sound artists. It examines key 20th century composers - Boulez, Cage, Fluxus, Cardew etc. and the inherited problems of notational strategies. The chapter is related to an exhibition curated at the University of Greenwich - Drawing towards Sound'.
